Analysis
January 2013

Having to buckle under consensus is never easy, and while I certainly liked Argo, I’m still amazed Alan Arkin has been garnering the sort of press and notoriety for his performance. The fact that he’s a serious threat in the category – both for a nomination and a potential win – is something of a shock. This is particularly disheartening given my affection for Tarantino’s latest, particularly with performances from Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio. While I want both actors to slide in with a nomination, the competitiveness of the category may not call for it.

Hell, neither man may make it come nominations day, with both Javier Bardem and Robert DeNiro looking to secure a spot. Most have given up Matthew McConaughey securing a nomination for Magic Mike. But is this category really going to be exclusive to previous Oscar winners? Something tells me that McConaughey (or DiCaprio) almost have to break through.
